TPS54331 vs TPS5430: Which 3 A Buck Converter?
2026-10-11 · PartVane Electronics
The TPS54331 and TPS5430 are both 3 A non-synchronous buck converters from Texas Instruments in 8-pin SOIC packages, so they are often considered for the same 12 V or 24 V rail. They differ in input range and switching frequency. This comparison uses only the TI datasheets (SLVS839H and SLVS632L).
Key differences from the datasheets
| Item | TPS54331 | TPS5430 |
|---|---|---|
| Input voltage | 3.5 V to 28 V | 5.5 V to 36 V |
| Continuous output current | 3 A | Up to 3 A (4 A peak) |
| Switching frequency | Fixed 570 kHz | Fixed 500 kHz |
| Adjustable output down to | 0.8 V | 1.22 V |
| Package | 8-pin SOIC or PowerPAD SOIC | 8-pin HSOIC PowerPAD (DDA) |
When to choose which
- TPS54331: the input can drop as low as 3.5 V, and the output can go down to 0.8 V.
- TPS5430: the 36 V input limit gives more headroom on 24 V buses with transients.
Not a drop-in swap
The two parts have different feedback references, frequencies and compensation, so the inductor, output capacitor and divider should be recalculated from the datasheet of the part you use. Check the pin functions on both datasheets before reusing a layout.
