MCP2515 + TJA1050: SPI CAN Interface Guide

2026-10-19 · PartVane Electronics

The MCP2515-I/SO is a stand-alone CAN controller, not a complete CAN node. It speaks SPI to your MCU and presents TXCAN and RXCAN logic pins, so a separate CAN transceiver such as the TJA1050T must sit between it and the bus. This guide explains how the two fit together and what to check when you source them.

Why you need a transceiver

The controller handles framing, arbitration, filtering and buffering, which reduces load on the host MCU. The physical differential bus (CANH/CANL) is driven by a transceiver. The TJA1050T is a commonly paired high-speed CAN transceiver in SO8; confirm its supply voltage and logic levels against the NXP datasheet for your design, especially if the MCP2515 runs from 3.3V.

Sourcing checklist

  • Match the temperature grade suffix (I vs E) to your application.
  • Match the package (SOIC vs TSSOP vs PDIP) to your footprint.
  • Confirm the crystal or oscillator frequency in your design, since CAN bit timing depends on it.
  • Ask for date code and photos before payment on small lots.
