LM358 vs LM2904 vs LM393: Op Amp or Comparator?

2026-10-16 · PartVane Electronics

The LM358DR and LM2904DR are dual op amps from one TI datasheet. The LM393DR looks similar in an SO-8 but is a dual comparator, not an op amp. Mixing them up is a common BOM mistake.

How to choose

  • Need to amplify or buffer an analog signal: LM358 or LM2904 family.
  • Need a yes/no threshold decision (over-voltage, zero-cross, level detect): LM393 family.
  • Do not use an op amp as a comparator in a design that needs defined switching speed; use the comparator.

LM358 vs LM2904

Both are covered by the same datasheet, so confirm the exact suffix (B, BA, A, V) and temperature grade on the datasheet ordering table before approving a substitute. Suffix differences change offset voltage (3mV max for A and B, 2mV max for BA) and ESD/EMI features.
