74HC595D vs SN74HC595N: Which 74HC595 Package?

2026-10-14 · PartVane Electronics

The 74HC595D (Nexperia, SO16) and SN74HC595N (Texas Instruments, PDIP-16) are the same 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register with 3-state output latches. The real difference is the package. This comparison uses only the Nexperia 74HC595 datasheet (Rev. 12) and the TI SNx4HC595 datasheet (SCLS041J).

Which to choose

  • 74HC595D: surface-mount boards and automated assembly.
  • SN74HC595N: breadboards, prototypes and through-hole boards.

Before swapping

Both use the same 16-pin function order (SER, SRCLK, RCLK, OE, SRCLR, QA to QH, QH'), but the footprints differ, so a PCB layout cannot be reused between SO16 and PDIP. Compare the electrical tables of both datasheets (output drive, timing at your supply voltage) before replacing one with the other.
